Both of these cartoons are by Rob Tornoe. Let me start off by saying I LIKE Rob’s cartoons. Didn’t I just link to him in my blogroll? Seems like a good guy, a successful editorial cartoonist, and blogs with Daryl Cagle on Daryl’s popular editorial site, politicalcartoons.com. He’s a friend on Facebook.

I like his drawing style, and he’s certainly a professional, in many more publications, and for many more years than me! He’s one of the biggies, as far as editorial cartoonists go, and also has his own blog. (Very attractive – love the orange background, with the chocolate brown header! But alas, it’s Blogger. As you know, I seldom follow Blogger sites, because Google has that self-serving ME ME ME bar at the top, and also commenting is so difficult there. Why make it difficult for your commenters, Blogger blogs!?)

I disagree with his politics, however (Okay, almost always disagree) and I was certainly offended by these 2 cartoons. They’re both about gay rights. I think it’s quite possible to write about homosexuality without talking about actual sex, don’t you? I’m pretty sure gays have the same modicum and decorum and sensitivity as straight adults.

He linked to this on Facebook last month:

Did Obama help gay rights? Maybe he didn’t do anything really big, but he wasn’t like Bush, who tried to stop it. And at least President Obama wasn’t as rude and disrespectful as Rob is here, having the office of the President give someone the finger.

The next one is worse, because it’s salacious – oh, hell, it’s ob-scene. I don’t know what No on One is, but Rob does a lot of cartoons for New Jersey, so maybe it was there.

I agree with the original idea, that schools who wouldn’t let their kids watch the President’s speech are moronic. Or, no, I guess the measure is not to hire gays as teachers?? Love the flat colors in this drawing. But…How can you ask people to vote the right way when your own cartoon is so offensive?! Well, Rob is the cartoonist for politicker.com and a bunch of east coast papers, so he probably knows better than me what newspaper editors like…But I don’t think my editors would like this. And I doubt many voters would like this, either, on either side of the issue.

And personally, I’m very glad I didn’t do these cartoons. YMMV. Am I too uptight? I guess you could say they’re just not my cup of tea. :)

Cartoon captions for Google: Mr. President, critics claim you didn’t lift a finger to help promote marriage equality. As you can see, they’re wrong.

If you vote No on One, guess who schools will hire to teach your kids…Hey everyone, I’m big gay Al, and today’s lesson is all about lub-rication! Vote Yes on One, paid for by religious wackos trying to scare you!

Not that I would know myself. But I sort of do know all the rest of it. Not that I’ve ever had an iPhone, or a house, but I lost an apartment I loved once. Chalk another one up to Dave Goldstein and John Heller.

"I'm a gay, unmarried Republican, living in LA, who lost my house and my iPhone. It sucks to be me. ©D.Barstow 2009 All rights reserved.

Re the caption, living in LA, vs San Fran or some other majorly gay city. I think it doesn’t have the San Fran cache, especially for gays. And maybe he hates the heat. The dry, searing heat and muddled looking curdled sky.

Also, LA doesn’t like Republicans. I wrote an anecdote in my general cartoon blog, Why I Did It, the other day, but I think it bears repeating here:

I told an editor at the LA Times that I had been maligned all over the internet, and that I was being called the “r” word. He said, “What do you mean?” I blushed a little (even though it was on the phone) and said, “r-acist“, and he said, “Oh. I thought you meant Republican.” Those wacky LA Times editors! Oh, and it was Tony Pierce. :) Although he was cool enough to laugh about it. (He’s the blog editor for all the LA Times’ blogs.)

Two years ago I was at an annual New Year’s Day Open House, hosted by a rabid, sign-toting, activist friend. A raving Democrat, who goes to rallies, meetings, etc. The desserts are always fantastic and generous, so believe me, it’s worth it. The talk turned to who we hoped would get nominated for President. Not just talk: we had to raise our hands and actually vote. (Are all rabid Dems like this?) I didn’t know anyone’s name except for Hillary Clinton, and so I picked her, although I think I said I wanted Guiliani, but he had just bowed out. I remember that we had to vote twice for some reason, and so the hole got deeper. I blanked out at this point…

Funny how things work out.

Proposition 8 cartoon Silent. Sign says: I’m mad as hell, and I’m going to take it some more.

Am I being disrespectful? Or funny? Only an editorial cartoonist knows for sure.

I was surprised when Proposition 8, here in California, got picked up by gays all over the country as a rallying cry. I thought it was a state by state thing. I mean, didn’t Massachusetts say yes? And some other states, so why hold up California? Good PR.

What gets me is the whining, and attacks on churches now. Here in LA, the No on 8 decided the problem was the Mormon church, because they had ads in favor of Prop 8. Of course, the LA Times had polls immediately after the election that it was blacks and Latinos by a large majority that voted against Gay rights. How many people of color do you know that are Mormons?

Gay rights movements didn’t care. It was much easier for them to attack a church than to attack different races, don’t you agree? Horse manure. Real mature.

Think this is a good cartoon? Remember, I don’t have to explain everything. Some political cartoons are puzzles.
